Is passive voice a real thing? What are the primary reasons for using passive?
Is the following sentence (called “Passive”) passive? In a second dictionary definition for the word spiritual I don’t approve
of this second usage either of the word spiritual.
If I have “I don’t approve” at the end, then, if “this second usage of spiritual” is a subject, in the end, putting “I” is the subject. Do you agree? Should passive voice be used to shift emphasis?
What is most important for you when planning a walk?
I don’t like this second use of spiritual. I’m a
total loser. It’s not Passive.
The list here refers to the expression object–verb–subject (OVS) which is not subject–verb–object (SVO). Why do people not approve of Spiritual second
second use as the same grammatical structure as saying.
When the subject is still I in both cases, it does not change to usage just because usage happens to be in front. If I were an object you would be me, and it’s not.
Can we take a sentence like:
The dog bit the boy?
And reverse it with a tensed inflection of be plus the original verb’s past participle with by and the old subject as an object of that preposition:
The boy was bitten by the dog.
If passive voice is considered passive then passive voice is considered passive. Merely placing the object in the first position isn’t sufficient to be passive voice.
When determining verbs by voice, you have spotted one reason to use passive, placing subject first when the acted upon party should receive the emphasis. The Affordable Care Act was passed by Congress in 2010.
In this ACA receives first billing as the subject of “was passed. The active form would put Congress up front, where it doesn’t need to be since all laws in the US are passed by Congress.
What are some alternative uses of passive logic?
When the actor is unknown:
Three people have been robbed in the last week downtown.
The robbers remain unidentified.
When identifying the actor I’m referring
to as a character isn’t important, so firefighters arrived at the burning apartment building at ten o’clock. Three people were admitted to the hospital for smoke inhalation. What happened?
Presumably someone at the front desk did the admitting, but no one is interested in their particulars.
Why did the
mayor support the resolution?
This is a better than the active-voice version, in which the mayor’s election history separates him from his
verb.
