Is the use of “… is/are hurting” from a victim’s standpoint grammatically correct?
I remember hearing a statement for United States President Obama one or two years ago (also after a shooting incident, most likely) where he remarked something like “… our people are hurting” (Newtown Daily News). Since he was referring to the victims, the context was pretty clear. I somehow cringed at the usage and tried to find if it was grammatically correct. “Some people are hurting”?
Is that entirely true that it is not the only American thing but rather, American?
