What is the importance of living at the foot of mountains?

Is it all right to say “I used to live in a town which is located at the foot of the mountains”or “at the foot of the mountains”?

Where I’m from, Foothills is generally what people say. Other options might include: highlands, crag edge, hillocks, fells, slope of the mountain.

You can either say the town was at the foot of the mountains, or in the foothills of the mountains. “foot” would be an incorrect usage, since the first is an idiom, the second is a term for a geological feature.
