“Chest” isn’t a synonym for trunks which are often round. When most people think of a chest they think of the rounded top box of the book “Treasure Island”. Is a chest a trunk?

What is a trunk? The latch at the top opening is large in proportion to a large opening in an elevator door. Most of the time it is rectangular. Can be made out of almost any material but material is usually light so that it can be transported easier. Also it will have protection pieces (strapping) that will add a little distance from main shell and potential harm or safety information.

A chest is shaped much like a trunk (almost always without the strapping) (and can’t be constrained to a chest measurement). This is not true if they are either small or huge. Can we make them from heavier materials on top of our shoes since they are made to keep things in in (your home or hidden treasure spot)? Also, chests have different compartments. I have a different one in my bag and they are usually smaller and are usually bigger. Where do chests usually have compartments? Also although a lot of chests may have a latch top – which is perfect for traveling – their opening mechanism for the top is quite a bit more variable. What do you think about a rounded top? Most chests don’t have round tops what limit your use of the word?

Two words can be synonyms of one another but there are small details that would warrant one’s use of the other. If not for traveling, I would very much always use my trunk. If it didn’t have a latch or had fancy compartments I would almost always use chest.
