Are you free?

What is the best way to ask my friend if he’s not able to hang out with me?

Are you free on Sunday? ”

I can feel the slight difference in the meaning of these two phrases (present continuous is used for asking about plans, while future simple doesn’t), but I don’t really understand it. What’s the difference between “true difference” and “true difference”?

What do you think of the story we’ve told you?
