the usage of “less” verb in a context.

I was sitting with a friend of mine, and we were discussing a specific issue and he was very liberal. I couldn’t believe he would not leave this country. After three cups of coffee (to get him a different perspective on debate as an adult) he started getting conservative about the same issues as I do. So, I told him “it seems that the coffee lesses your liberality” I feel that this sentence is awkward, especially when using the word “lesses”, isn’t it? How do I rephrase the sentence to look more natural?

What is your opinion on what do you think if you decide to study psychology in order to get a course in a specific area?

Why are lesses used as a word?

I have only found 1 instance where it is a noun ( Thefreedictionary ) but the word is probably Archaic.

The OED is not a word. “Lesses” is a word that has been replaced by “lesses”. A dictionary does not contain this word.

I think you mean lessens…

I think you mean the word “lessens” which is a type of verb. Furthermore, the verb seems can be a linking verb and it is such in this case.

Why does coffee reduce liberality?

If you can replace “seems” with verb form of to be (am, is, are etc.) it is a linking verb. It seems that the coffee lessens your liberality I think so but again;

it is incorrectly placed awkwardly, but if you

are still thinking, you can still

switch it to: “It is the coffee

that lessens your liberality, ” it seems the coffee lessens your liberality.”

X can be replaced with = weakens: heighten Notice

how they are 3rd person present verbs, because it is written in the third person.

I told him “it seems that the coffee lessens your liberality.” works pretty well. Other synonyms of lessen, such as mitigates or reduces, or other similar words. What seems to work for

you and whoever it is?
